Meyer Werft
The Meyer Werft GmbH is one of the major German shipyards, headquartered in Papenburg at the river Ems. Founded in 1795 and starting with small wooden vessels, today Meyer Werft is one of world´s leading builders of luxury passenger ships. Altogether about 700 ships of different types have been built at the yard. Meyer Werft has been owned and managed by the Meyer family for six generations.
Ems powerline crossing
The 380KV-Ems-Overhead Powerline Crossing is a power line crossing for two circuits on the Ems River South of Weener, Germany. It is mounted on two 84 metre tall pylons with two crossbars. The length of the span is 405 metres. The crossing is an obstacle for ships built by Meyer Werft in Papenburg. Although the ships can pass beneath the line, the clearance is often so close that the line has to be switched off.
2006 European blackout
On Saturday, November 4, 2006, a planned and routine disconnection of the Ems powerline crossing in Northwest Germany was carried out to allow a ship to pass beneath the overhead cables. The disconnection resulted in minor changes in load flows. During the next thirty minutes, the situation changed rapidly with unexpected load flows threatening the N1 safety limit. An uncoordinated attempt to re-route the load flow resulted in the tripping of the Landesbergen-Wehrendorf 380kV interconnector.
