Observatory of Strasbourg

The Observatory of Strasbourg is an astronomical observatory in Strasbourg, France. Following the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71, the city of Strasbourg became part of the German Empire. The University of Strasbourg was refounded in 1872 and a new observatory began construction in 1875. The main instrument was a 50 cm Repsold refractor, which saw first light in 1880. At the time this was the largest instrument in the German Empire.

Battle of Diersheim (1797)

The Battle of Diersheim (20–21 April 1797) saw a First French Republic army led by Jean Victor Marie Moreau clash with a Habsburg Austrian army commanded by Anton Count Sztáray de Nagy-Mihaly. Though both sides suffered about 3,000 casualties in the bitter fighting, the Austrians finally retreated with the loss of 13 artillery pieces. Austrian General Wilhelm von Immens was killed and Sztáray badly wounded.

Ill (France)

The Ill is a river in Alsace, in north-eastern France. It is a "left-side", or western tributary of the Rhine. It starts down from its source near the village of Winkel, in the Jura mountains, with a resurgence near Ligsdorf, turns around Ferrette on its east side, and then runs northward through Alsace, flowing parallel to the Rhine.

Rench

The Rench is a river in the district of Ortenau, Baden-Württemberg, Germany and a right-side tributary of the Rhine River. Its source is near Kniebis Mountain not far from Bad Griesbach in the Black Forest. It runs for 59 km before it discharges into the Rhine River near Rheinau/Lichtenau. The Rench runs along the Rench Valley through Bad Peterstal, Oppenau, Lautenbach, Oberkirch and Renchen. In Oppenau the Lierbach discharges into the Rench.

Rhenus Sport

Rhenus Sport is an multi-purpose arena, located in Strasbourg, France. The seating capacity is 6,200 people. In 1981, in was the venue of the European Champions Cup basketball final, in which Maccabi Tel Aviv defeated Synudine Bologna 80-79. Marne–Rhine Canal

The Marne–Rhine Canal (French: Canal de la Marne au Rhin) is a canal in north eastern France. It connects the river Marne in Vitry-le-François with the Rhine in Strasbourg. Combined with the canalised part of the Marne, it allows transport between Paris and eastern France. The original objective of the canal was to connect Paris and the north of France with the Alsace, the Rhine, and Germany. The 313 km long canal was opened in 1853.

Siege of Kehl (1733)

Fort Rapp

Fort Rapp (once called Fort Moltke) is part of the 14 fortifications erected in Alsace by the Prussian general Von Moltke after the fall of Strasbourg in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War and following the siege of Strasbourg. Built between 1872–1874 and inaugurated on 26 September 1874, it was part of the fortifications meant to protect the city from French attacks. Since 1918 and the return of Alsace-Lorraine to France, it is named after the French general Jean Rapp.
