Thiepval Memorial
The Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme is a major war memorial to 72,191 missing British and South African men who died in the Battles of the Somme of the First World War between 1915 and 1918 with no known grave. It is near the village of Thiepval, Picardie in France. A visitors' centre opened in 2004.
Battle of Mouquet Farm
The Battle of Mouquet Farm, which began on 5 August 1916, was part of the Battle of the Somme and followed the Battle of Pozières. The farm was eventually captured on 26 September by No. 16 Section of the 6th East Yorkshire Pioneers.
Battle of Flers-Courcelette
The Battle of Flers–Courcelette, was a battle within the Franco-British Somme Offensive which took place in the summer and autumn of 1916. Launched on the 15 September 1916 the battle went on for one week. Flers–Courcelette began with the objective of cutting a hole in the German line by using massed artillery and infantry attacks. This hole would then be exploited with the use of cavalry. It was the third and final general offensive mounted by the British Army during the Battle of the Somme.
Battle of Thiepval Ridge
The Battle of Thiepval Ridge was the first large offensive mounted by the Reserve Army of Lieutenant General Hubert Gough during the Battle of the Somme and was intended to benefit from the Fourth Army attack at Morval by starting 24 hours afterwards.
Battle of the Ancre
The Battle of the Ancre 13–18 November, was the final large British attack of the Battle of the Somme in 1916, before the winter weather forced a pause in British attacks until the new year. It was fought by the Fifth Army, under the command of Lieutenant General Hubert Gough, against the German First Army under General von Below. The intent of the British attack was to fulfill complementary objectives.
Ulster Tower
The Ulster Tower is a memorial to the men of the 36th (Ulster) Division. The memorial was officially opened on November 19, 1921 and is a very close copy of Helen's Tower which stands in the grounds of the Clandeboye Estate, near Bangor, County Down in Northern Ireland. Many of the men of the Ulster Division trained in the estate before moving to England and then France early in 1916. The tower (plus a small cafe nearby) is staffed by members of the Somme Association, which is based in Belfast.
Adanac Military Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery
Adanac Military Cemetery is a Commonwealth War Graves Commission burial ground for the dead of World War I located near the French villages of Miraumont, Pys and Courcelette. The cemetery was formed after the war ended from the consolidation of existing burial sites, primarily the graves from the Canadian battlefields around Courcelette. The name is a reversal of "Canada".
Mill Road Cemetery
Mill Road Cemetery is a Commonwealth War Graves Commission burial ground for the dead of World War I situated near the French town of Thiepval. The cemetery was established as a battlefield cemetery for troops killed in the Battle of the Somme. Battlefield clearances of the surrounding area in 1919 significantly increased the size of the cemetery.
