The World Wide Web (abbreviated as WWW or W3, commonly known as the Web), is a system of interlinked hypertext documents accessed via the Internet. With a web browser, one can view web pages that may contain text, images, videos, and other multimedia, and navigate between them via hyperlinks.
CERN
The European Organization for Nuclear Research (French: Organisation européenne pour la recherche nucléaire Italian: Organizzazione Europea per la Ricerca Nucleare), known as CERN or Cern is an international organization whose purpose is to operate the world's largest particle physics laboratory. Established in 1954, the organization is based in the northwest suburbs of Geneva on the Franco–Swiss border, and has 20 European member states.
Compact Muon Solenoid
The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment is one of two large general-purpose particle physics detectors built on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Switzerland and France. The goal of CMS experiment is to investigate a wide range of physics, including the search for the Higgs boson, extra dimensions, and particles that could make up dark matter. CMS is 25 metres long, 15 metres in diameter, and weighs about 12,500 tons.
Large Hadron Collider
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world's largest and highest-energy particle accelerator, and considered "one of the great engineering milestones of mankind".
ATLAS experiment
ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC Apparatus) is one of the seven particle detector experiments constructed at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), a particle accelerator at CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research) in Switzerland. The experiment is designed to take advantage of the unprecedented energy available at the LHC and observe phenomena that involve highly massive particles which were not observable using earlier lower-energy accelerators.
Super Proton Synchrotron
The Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) is a particle accelerator of the synchrotron type at CERN. It is housed in a circular tunnel, 6.9 kilometres in circumference, straddling the border of France and Switzerland near Geneva, Switzerland.
Microcosm (CERN)
Microcosm is a museum of particle physics located at CERN in the Canton of Geneva, Switzerland, near the town of Meyrin. It covers a broad range of particle physics topics, as well as the entire history of CERN. Exhibits include: explanations of the purpose of CERN and particle physics research in general.
LHCb
LHCb (standing for "Large Hadron Collider beauty") is one of seven particle physics detector experiments collecting data at the Large Hadron Collider accelerator at CERN. LHCb is a specialized b-physics experiment, that is measuring the parameters of CP violation in the interactions of b-hadrons (heavy particles containing a bottom quark). Such studies can help to explain the Matter-Antimatter asymmetry of the Universe.
TOTEM
A totem is a being, object, or symbol representing an animal or plant that serves as an emblem of a group of people, such as a family, clan, group, lineage, or tribe, reminding them of their ancestry (or mythic past). In kinship and descent, if the apical ancestor of a clan is nonhuman, it is called a totem. Normally this belief is accompanied by a totemic myth. They have been around for many years.
Intersecting Storage Rings
The ISR (Intersecting Storage Rings) was a particle accelerator at CERN. It was the world's first hadron collider, and ran from 1971 to 1984, with a maximum center of mass energy of 62 GeV.
Proton Synchrotron
The Proton Synchrotron (PS) is the first major particle accelerator at CERN, built as a 28 GeV proton accelerator in the late 1950s and put into operation in 1959. It takes the protons from the Proton Synchrotron Booster at a kinetic energy of 1.4 GeV and lead ions from the Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR) at 72 MeV per nucleon. It has been operated as an injector for the Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR), the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) and the Large Electron-Positron Collider (LEP).
International University in Geneva
International University in Geneva (IUG) is a private university founded in 1997 and located in Geneva, Switzerland.
Arrondissement of Gex
The arrondissement of Gex is an arrondissement of France in the Ain department in the Rhône-Alpes region. It has three cantons and 29 communes.
History of the World Wide Web
The World Wide Web ("WWW" or simply the "Web") is a global information medium which users can read and write via computers connected to the Internet. The term is often mistakenly used as a synonym for the Internet itself, but the Web is a service that operates over the Internet, just as e-mail also does. The history of the Internet dates back significantly further than that of the World Wide Web.
LHCf
The LHCf ("Large Hadron Collider forward") is a special-purpose Large Hadron Collider experiment for astroparticle physics, and one of seven detectors in the LHC accelerator at CERN. The other six are: ATLAS, ALICE, CMS, MoEDAL, TOTEM, and LHCb. LHCf is designed to study the particles generated in the "forward" region of collisions, those almost directly in line with the colliding proton beams. It therefore consists of two detectors, 140 m on either side of the interaction point.
Allondon
The Allondon is a river which flows for some 22 kilometres between France and Switzerland in the Rhône Alps area. Its source is located in the commune of Échenevex in the Ain department and ends in the river Rhône at the village of Russin in the canton of Geneva of Switzerland. It is home to the only recently known population of the rare insect Lachesilla rossica.
