Spanning over 560 hectares, this vast complex is a testament to the grandeur and cultural significance of the Qing Dynasty.
History
Construction of the Mountain Resort began in 1703 during the reign of Emperor Kangxi and continued for over 90 years under the reigns of his successors, Emperor Yongzheng and Emperor Qianlong. The site was initially intended as a retreat for the emperors to escape the summer heat of Beijing and conduct state affairs in a more relaxed environment.
The Mountain Resort was designed to resemble the layout of the Forbidden City in Beijing, with a series of palaces, pavilions, and gardens spread across the vast landscape. The architectural styles of the buildings within the complex are diverse, reflecting the cultural diversity of the Qing Dynasty. The main palace, known as the Main Hall of the Palace of Universal Peace, is a magnificent structure that served as the emperor's residence during his visits.
One of the most remarkable features of the Mountain Resort is the collection of outlying temples, which were built to represent different regions of the Qing Empire. These temples were constructed in various architectural styles, including Tibetan, Mongolian, and Han, to accommodate the religious practices of different ethnic groups within the empire.
