Concepción, Chile
Concepción is a Chilean city and commune belonging to the metropolitan area of Greater Concepción, its one of the largest urban conurbations of Chile. The town of Concepcion has a significant impact on domestic trade being part of the region with most industrialization of the country and politically it has the second majority of representatives in the National Congress of Chile.
Huáscar (ironclad)
Huáscar is a 19th century small armoured turret ship of a type similar to a monitor. She was built in Britain for Peru and played a significant role in the battle of Pacocha and the War of the Pacific against Chile before being captured and commissioned with the Chilean Navy. Today she is one of the few surviving ships of her type. The ship has been restored and is currently commissioned as a memorial ship. She is named after the 16th century Inca emperor, Huáscar.

The VIII Bío Bío Region (Spanish: VIII Región del Bio-Bío), one of the fifteen first-order administrative divisions in Chile, comprises four provinces: Arauco, Bío Bío, Concepción, and Ñuble. The University of Concepción, also known for its acronym UdeC, is one of the most prestigious universities in Chile. It was the first University founded in the South of Chile, and the first to become a private-law corporation. In addition, it belongs to the Southern Cross University Network .
University of the Bío Bío
University of Bío-Bío (Spanish: Universidad del Bío-Bío) is a university in Chile. It is part of the Chilean Traditional Universities. The University of Bío-Bío is heir of the tradition of state and public higher education in the Bío Bío Region. Its roots go back to the creation of the Technical University of the State (TUS), on April 9, 1947, and to the Ñuble Campus of the University of Chile.
Bío Bío River
The Bío Bío River (also known as Bío Bío or Bio-Bio) is the second largest river in Chile. It originates from Icalma and Galletué lakes in the Andes and flows 380 km to the Gulf of Arauco on the Pacific Ocean. The major tributaries of the river are the Malleco and the Laja. The river is Chile's second-longest river (the longest being Loa River) and Biobío basin is Chile's third largest watershed, after Loa and Baker basins.
Estadio Municipal de Concepción
Estadio Municipal de Concepcion is a multi-purpose stadium in Concepción, Chile. It is currently used mostly for football matches. The stadium was built in 1962 and has a capacity of 29,000 people.
Estadio Las Higueras
Estadio Las Higueras was a football stadium in Talcahuano, Chile. It was the home ground of the Club Deportivo Huachipato until the current Estadio CAP opened in 2009. The stadium held 10,000 people, was built in 1960 and was demolished in 2008.
Carriel Sur International Airport
Carriel Sur International Airport is located in Concepción, approximately 500 km southwest of Santiago. It is the second largest airport in Chile and serves domestic traffic for LAN Airlines and Sky Airline. Due to its close proximity to Arturo Merino Benitez it also serves as a primary alternate airport for it, usually receiving international traffic from Santiago as the airport closes due to weather.
Club Hípico de Concepción
Club Hipico de Concepcion, also called the Mediocamino, is a Thoroughbred race track in Hualpen near Concepcion in the Bio-Bio Region of Chile. It features a right-handed nine-furlong dirt track. Currently, no major races are run at the Mediocamino. Four-time American Champion jockey Jose Santos, a native of Concepcion, started his career at the track.
Juan Pablo II Bridge
The Juan Pablo II Bridge, also known as Puente Nuevo ("New Bridge"), is a bridge in Chile connecting Concepción and Talcahuano with San Pedro de la Paz, through the Biobío River. Since completion in 1974 it has remained the longest bridge in the country. It was significantly damaged in the February 27, 2010 earthquake.
1570 Concepción earthquake
The 1570 Concepción earthquake occurred at 9:00, on February 8, 1570. The strong earthquake destroyed Concepción, Chile. It was accompanied by a tsunami, and aftershocks were felt for months. According to NOAA at least 2000 lives were lost and every house was destroyed. Because of a delay between the earthquake and the tsunami, much of the population was able to escape to higher ground.
Coliseo La Tortuga
Coliseo La Tortuga is an indoor sporting arena located in Talcahuano, Chile. The capacity of the arena is 10,000 spectators and it is used mostly for basketball. El Coliseo La Tortuga Monumental, known popularly as La Tortuga de Talcahuano, is a sports and entertainment centre, renowned for its distinctive roof, which is similar to a shell of a turtle.
Fort Chepe
Fort Chepe was a fort established in 1603 by Governor Alonso de Ribera on Cerro de Chepe (Chepe Hill) west of Concepcion, Chile on the north bank of the Bio Bio River. It was built for defense of the crossing of the Bio Bio River at this point near the mouth of the river, and of the road to old Concepcion.
Presencia de América Latina
Presencia de América Latina (Presence of Latin America), also known as Integración de América Latina (Integration of Latin America) is a mural painted by Mexican artist Jorge González Camarena between November 1964 and April 1965. The 300-square-meter mural, painted in acrylic on rough stucco, is located in the lobby of the Casa del Arte of the University of Concepción (Ciudad Universitaria de Concepción), in Concepción, Chile.
1751 Concepción earthquake
The 1751 Concepción earthquake was one of the strongest and most destructive recorded quakes in Chilean history. It struck the Central Valley of the country, destroying the cities of Concepción, Chillán, Cauquenes, Curicó and Talca, probably on May 24, 1751, although there is currently a debate among scholars as to the exact date of the earthquake.
Estadio CAP
Estadio CAP (Compañía de Acero del Pacífico), is a football stadium in Talcahuano, Chile. It is the home field of the Huachipato football team. Until 2012, Naval also played its home matches there. Opened in 2009, it replaced the old Estadio Las Higueras, which was demolished in 2008. The stadium capacity is 10,500 people (all-seated).
1835 Concepción earthquake
The 1835 Concepción earthquake occurred near the neighboring cities of Concepción and Talcahuano in Chile on February 20 at 15:30 local time and has an estimated magnitude of 8.2 Mfa or 8.1 Ml. The earthquake triggered a tsunami which caused the destruction of Talcahuano. A total of at least 50 people died from the effects of the earthquake and the tsunami. The earthquake caused damage from San Fernando in the north to Osorno in the south.
Central market of Concepción, Chile
The Central market of Concepción is a marketplace of fruits and vegetables with restaurants in the downtown area of Concepción. The area of the Central market is 3.600 m². After the earthquake of Chillán on 1939, the Central market was designed on 1940 by the architects Tibor Weiner and Ricardo Mulle.
