Summary

Angkor is one of the most important archaeological sites in South-East Asia. Stretching over some 400 km2, including forested area, Angkor Archaeological Park contains the magnificent remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire, from the 9th to the 15th century. They include the famous Temple of Angkor Wat and, at Angkor Thom, the Bayon Temple with its countless sculptural decorations. UNESCO has set up a wide-ranging programme to safeguard this symbolic site and its surroundings.

Angkor, located in the Siem Reap province of Cambodia, is a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its ancient temples and rich cultural heritage. Spanning over 400 square kilometers, this archaeological site is a testament to the grandeur and sophistication of the Khmer Empire, which flourished from the 9th to the 15th centuries.

History

The history of Angkor dates back to the 9th century when King Jayavarman II established his capital in the region. Over the next few centuries, subsequent kings expanded and embellished the city, constructing magnificent temples and reservoirs. The most iconic temple, Angkor Wat, was built during the reign of King Suryavarman II in the 12th century and remains the largest religious monument in the world.

Angkor reached its zenith during the reign of King Jayavarman VII in the late 12th century. Under his rule, the empire expanded, and numerous temples and infrastructure projects were constructed. However, the decline of the Khmer Empire began in the 14th century due to internal conflicts, external invasions, and environmental challenges. The capital was eventually abandoned, and Angkor was reclaimed by the jungle.

Current State

Today, Angkor is a major tourist destination, attracting millions of visitors each year. The site is managed by the Apsara National Authority, which works to preserve and protect the temples and surrounding areas. Extensive restoration efforts have been undertaken to maintain the structural integrity of the temples and prevent further deterioration.

Angkor Wat, the most famous temple, is a masterpiece of Khmer architecture and a symbol of Cambodia. Its intricate carvings, towering spires, and vast moat leave visitors in awe. The temple is still an active religious site, and visitors can witness Buddhist ceremonies and rituals taking place within its walls.

Aside from Angkor Wat, there are numerous other temples within the Angkor Archaeological Park that showcase the architectural brilliance of the Khmer Empire. The Bayon Temple, with its enigmatic smiling faces, and Ta Prohm, famously known as the "Tomb Raider" temple, with its intertwining tree roots, are among the most popular attractions.
