Summary

Spread over an area of over 27,000 ha, at an altitude between 1008 and 2914 m in the Pirin Mountains, southwest Bulgaria, the site comprises diverse limestone mountain landscapes with glacial lakes, waterfalls, caves and predominantly coniferous forests. It was added to the World Heritage List in 1983. The extension now covers an area of around 40,000 ha in the Pirin Mountains, and overlaps with the Pirin National Park, except for two areas developed for tourism (skiing). The dominant part of the extension is high mountain territory over 2000m in altitude, and covered mostly by alpine meadows, rocky screes and summits.

Introduction

In the 8th century BC, the Thracians settled in the region and left behind numerous archaeological sites, including burial mounds and rock sanctuaries. The Thracians considered the mountains sacred and believed they were the dwelling place of their gods.

During the Middle Ages, the park was part of the Bulgarian Empire and played a crucial role in the defense of the country. Several fortresses were built in the area, serving as strategic strongholds against invaders.

In the 20th century, Pirin National Park became a protected area, initially as a nature reserve in 1934 and later as a national park in 1962. Its unique natural and cultural values were recognized by UNESCO in 1983 when it was designated as a World Heritage site.

Current State

Pirin National Park is a haven for biodiversity, boasting a remarkable variety of flora and fauna. The park is home to over 1,300 plant species, including several endemic and rare species. The forests of Pirin are particularly noteworthy, with ancient trees that have stood for centuries.

Pirin National Park offers a range of recreational activities for visitors. Hiking is a popular choice, with numerous trails leading to breathtaking viewpoints, crystal-clear lakes, and cascading waterfalls. The park's highest peak, Vihren, attracts mountaineers from around the world.
