Testerep
Testerep (or Ter Streep) was an island along the Belgian coast. Fishing villages were scattered about, among them were Oostende and Westende. Oostende being the far east, Westende the far west, and Middelkerke (literally 'middle-church') the middle of the island. Later, the sea level dropped and the island became connected to the Belgian coast.
Westende
Westende is a town in Flanders, one of the three regions of Belgium, and in the Flemish province of West-Flanders. It lies on the Belgian coast, also called Flemish coast. It used to be the far west of the island Testerep which lay along the Belgian coast.
Keiem
Keiem is a small town situated some 7 km north of Diksmuide in West Flanders, Belgium. Administratively it forms part of Diksmuide Municipality. Lying close to the right bank of the River Yser, the town suffered extensive flooding when, on 21 October 1914, the sea locks at the mouth of this river were opened as a defensive measure against the advancing German army during the "Race to the Sea" phase of World War I.

Siege of Ostend
The Siege of Ostend was a three-year siege of the city of Ostend during the Eighty Years' War and one of the longest sieges in history. It is remembered as the bloodiest battle of the war, and culminated in a Spanish victory. It is said "the Spanish assailed the unassailable; the Dutch defended the indefensible. " General Sir Francis Vere led a 3,000-men strong English army in support of the Dutch, and was appointed Governor of Ostende by Maurice of Nassau in 1601.
Mercator (ship)
The barquentine Mercator was designed by the Antarctic explorer Adrien de Gerlache (1866–1934) as a training ship for the Belgian merchant fleet. She was named after Gerardus Mercator (1512–1594), Flemish cartographer. She was built in Leith, Scotland and launched in 1932. Besides being a training a ship, she was also used, mainly before World War II, for scientific observations, or as ambassador for Belgium on world fairs and in sailing events. This ship went through an incredible history.
Sabena OO-AUB Ostend crash
Sabena OO-AUB was a Junkers Ju 52 airliner owned by Belgian airline Sabena, operating as a scheduled domestic passenger flight between Cologne, Germany, to London, United Kingdom, which crashed near Ostend, Belgium on 16 November 1937. The flight was scheduled to stop at Brussels, but bad weather forced the pilot to continue to Ostend. Unfortunately, conditions were little better at Ostend, and the aircraft hit a factory chimney while circling to land at Stene Airport.
Albertpark
Albertpark is a multi-use stadium in Ostend, Belgium. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home ground of K.V. Oostende. The stadium holds 8,000.
Port of Ostend
The port of Ostend is situated in Ostend, West Flanders. The port is mainly known as a ferry port. Freight, and recently also passenger transport between Ostend and Ramsgate is provided by Transeuropa Ferries. The port also services freight transport between Ostend and both Ipswich and Killingholme.

Ostend-Bruges International Airport
Ostend-Bruges International Airport is located in Ostend, Belgium, near the coast and about 25 km from the city centre of Bruges. Although an important proportion of the activities focuses on freight transport, it is increasingly used for passenger flights, mainly charter and holiday flights organised by the tour operators. It is also often used for private business flights.
Hippodrome Wellington
The Hippodrome Wellington (also Wellingtonrenbaan) was a horse racing track in Ostend in the Flemish Region of Belgium built in 1883 and named for the Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington. The facility hosted both harness and flat racing events. Notable among its flat races for Thoroughbred horses was the Grand Prix Prince Rose held annually in July on the Nationale feestdag. Formerly known as the Grand International d'Ostende, it was renamed to honor the great Belgian horse, Prince Rose.
Sea'Arena
Sea'Arena is a multi-purpose arena in Oostende, Belgium. Sea'Arena holds 5,000 people and opened in 2006. It hosts the home games of BC Oostende basketball club as well as Fed Cup matches.
Second Ostend Raid
The Second Ostend Raid (officially known as Operation VS) was the later of two failed attempts made during the spring of 1918 by the United Kingdom's Royal Navy to block the channels leading to the Belgian port of Ostend as a part of its conflict with the German Empire during World War I.
Sint-Petrus-en-Pauluskerk
Sint-Petrus-en-Pauluskerk, the main church of Ostend, Belgium, is a Roman Catholic Neo-Gothic church. It is built on the ashes of a previous church that occupied the site. King Leopold II enthusiastically supported a plan to build a new and more magnificent church. Construction started on 1899 and was completed and consecrated by Bishop Waffelaert on August 31, 1908. Its stained glass windows were destroyed during the two World Wars and were replaced by windows by Michiel Martens.

The Greenbridge science park is a business incubator and science park of Ghent University and is located on the Plassendale site in Ostend. The site is aimed towards research and development in Feed and food, Health and wellness, Environment and energy and ICT applications in those sectors.
Moere
Moere is a small village located within the municipality of Gistel in West-Flanders, Belgium. The village gained some fame when American singer Marvin Gaye moved there for several months in the early 1980s. During his stay, the singer composed his hit songs "Sexual Healing" and "Midnight Love. " The house he resided in remains an attraction to this day.
SM UC-70
SM UC-70 was a German Type UC II minelaying submarine or U-boat in the German Imperial Navy during World War I. The U-boat was ordered on 12 January 1916 and was launched on 7 August 1916. She was commissioned into the German Imperial Navy on 20 November 1916 as SM UC-70. In 10 patrols UC-70 was credited with sinking 32 ships, either by torpedo or by mines laid. On 28 August 1918, UC-70 was spotted lying submerged on the sea bottom and attacked by a Blackburn Kangaroo patrol aircraft of No.
Mariakerke (West Flanders)
Mariakerke is a seaside resort in the West Flanders province of Belgium. Previously a village of its own just to the west of Ostend, it now forms part of that town. It has 11,305 inhabitants.
Walraversijde
Walraversijde is an abandoned medieval fishing village on the Belgian coast, near Ostend. It was rediscovered in 1992 in a dune area, near a medieval dyke. Archeological research showed that it had been occupied, in two phases, between 1200 and 1600. Walraversijde has been studied more thoroughly and more systematically than any other medieval fishing community in Europe. The village has been partially reconstructed, and has a museum, Walraversijde Museum, dedicated to the site.
Mu.ZEE
The Mu. ZEE is a museum in Ostend, Belgium, specialized in Belgian art from 1830 on. It was created in 2008 by fusion of the former Provinciaal Museum voor Moderne Kunst (PMMK, the museum for modern art of the Province of West-Flanders) and the Museum voor Schone Kunsten Oostende (Museum of Fine Arts Ostend), both located in Ostend. The Museum has two dependencies, the Ensorhuis in Ostend, and the Permekemuseum in Jabbeke. Mu.
Fort Napoleon, Ostend
Fort Napoleon in Ostend is a polygonal fort built in the Napoleonic era. During World War I, the fort was used as accommodation for a German headquarters, and decorated with murals by German soldier Heinrich Otto Pieper. The heavy coastal artillery battery "Hindenburg" was stationed nearby; it had been transferred there from Fort Heppen, Wilhelmshaven in 1915, and it was armed with four 280mm (11 inch) guns of 1886-1887 vintage in heavily armored turrets on semi-circular concrete platforms.
Flanders Marine Institute
The Flanders Marine Institute provides a focal point for marine scientific research in Flanders, northern Belgium. The autonomous non-profit institute does not conduct research itself, but assists in coordinating international research and provides a database for sharing research results. VLIZ also manages RV Zeeleeuw, a marine research vessel. The ship mainly operates day trips, and as of 2010 a replacement was being sought.
Raversijde
Raversijde is in Flanders on part of the Belgian coast between Ostende and Middelkerke which is located on the North Sea coast. Raversijde also has the remains of the Atlantic Wall in the dunes built under the German Occupation of Belgium in the Second World War. Raversijde is located on the Kusttram, which is the coastal tramway.
Oostende railway station
Oostende railway station is located in Ostend in Flanders, Belgium. The first station in Ostend was opened in 1838 during the reign of Leopold I of Belgium on the former Belgian railway line 62 to Torhout and is now a supermarket. The NMBS station was opened in 1913 during the reign of Albert I of Belgium. The station is designed to connect trains and ferries and is built with Scottish Granite, Bluestone from Soignes and Limestone from Euville.
