Brussels Airport
Brussels Airport (also called Brussel Nationaal/Bruxelles-National/Brussel-Zaventem) is an international airport 6 NM northeast of Brussels, Belgium. The airport is partially in Zaventem and partially in the Diegem area of Machelen, both located in the Flemish Region of Belgium. Brussels Airport currently consists of 54 contact gates, and a total of 109 gates. It is home to around 260 companies, together directly employing 20,000 people.
Laurence Owen
Laurence Rochon "Laurie" Owen was a Hall of Fame American figure skater. She was the 1961 U.S. National Champion and represented the United States at the 1960 Winter Olympics, where she placed 6th. She was the daughter of Maribel Vinson and Guy Owen and the sister of Maribel Owen. Owen died, along with her mother, sister and the entire United States Figure Skating team, in the crash of Sabena Flight 548 en route to the 1961 World Figure Skating Championships.
Sabena Flight 548
Sabena Flight 548, registration OO-SJB, was a Boeing 707 aircraft that crashed en route to Brussels, Belgium, from New York City on February 15, 1961, killing the entire United States Figure Skating team on its way to the 1961 World Championships in Prague, Czechoslovakia. The flight, which originated at New York International Airport, Anderson Field (now John F. Kennedy International Airport), crashed on approach to Brussels' Zaventem Airport.
Sterrebeek
Sterrebeek is a town in the municipality (gemeente) of Zaventem, and a suburb on the east-northeast side of Brussels. Brussels American School is located in Sterrebeek. The official language is Dutch (as everywhere in Flanders). Small local minorities consist of nationals from many European Union-countries, USA and Canada, and from French-speakers who came from Wallonia or Brussels.
Brussels National Airport railway station
Brussels National Airport railway station is a through-train station located beneath Brussels Airport. It was opened in 1958 in the old airport building, mainly for the universal exposition in Brussels. With the opening of a new airport terminal in 1994, the railway station was moved in 1998 to a new location inside the new building. Following the opening of the new Diabolo project, the station was extended in June 2012 to enhance the comfort and passengers experience.
Nossegem
Nossegem is a town located near Brussels, the capital of Belgium. It is part of Zaventem municipality, in the Flemish Brabant province. In 2005, the Nossegem Curve was opened, which connects Brussels Airport with the railway in the direction of Leuven.
Sabena Flight Academy
CAE Global Academy Brussels Sabena Flight Acacemy is an aviation training organisation created in 1953 and located in Steenokkerzeel. The school is now part of CAE Global Academy. The training is performed in Brussels, in Mesa at CAE Global Academy Phoenix (formerly Sabena Airline Training Center) and in Évora, Portugal. Sabena Flight Academy is one of the oldest and considered as one of the most considered airline transport pilot school in Europe.
Brussels Airport diamond heist
On 18 February 2013, eight masked gunmen in two cars with police markings stole approximately US$50 million worth of diamonds from a Swiss-bound Fokker 100 operated by Helvetic Airways on the apron at Brussels Airport, Belgium, just before 20:00 CET. The heist was accomplished without a shot being fired.
