Deux-Nèthes
Deux-Nèthes is the name of a département of the First French Empire in present Belgium and the Netherlands. It is named after two branches of the river Nete. The southern part of its territory corresponds more or less with the present Belgian province Antwerp. It was formed in 1795, when the Southern Netherlands were annexed by France. Its territory was the northern part of the former duchy of Brabant.
Fall of Antwerp
This Siege of Antwerp took place during the Eighty Years' War from July 1584 until August 1585. At the time Antwerp was not only the largest Dutch city but was also the cultural, economic and financial centre of the Seventeen Provinces and of north-western Europe. On 4 November 1576, unpaid Spanish soldiery mutinied: they plundered and burnt the city during what was called the Spanish Fury. Thousands of citizens were massacred and hundreds of houses were burnt down.
Cathedral of Our Lady (Antwerp)
The Cathedral of Our Lady is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Antwerp, Belgium. Today's see of the Diocese of Antwerp was started in 1352 and, although the first stage of construction was ended in 1521, has never been 'completed'. In Gothic style, its architects were Jan and Pieter Appelmans. It contains a number of significant works by the Baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens, as well as paintings by artists such as Otto van Veen, Jacob de Backer and Marten de Vos.
Silvius Brabo
Silvius Brabo [ˈsɪɫviəz ˈbraːboː] is a mythical Roman soldier who is said to have killed a giant, and by this would have created the name Brabant. Later this story was also used to explain the name Antwerp (meaning hand throwing). Brabo once killed a giant, called Druon Antigoon, who asked money from people who wanted to pass the bridge over the river Scheldt. When they didn't want to or couldn't pay, he cut off their hand and threw it in the river.
Antwerp City Hall
The City Hall of Antwerp, Belgium, stands on the western side of Antwerp's Grote Markt (Great Market Square). Erected between 1561 and 1565 to the design of Cornelis Floris de Vriendt and several other architects and artists, this Renaissance building incorporates both Flemish and Italian influences. The low arcaded ground story is of rusticated stone, and at one time housed little shops.

Boerentoren
The Boerentoren (English: Farmers' Tower) or KBC Tower is the tallest building and the second tallest structure in Antwerp, Belgium after the Cathedral of Our Lady (Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal). The building was constructed between 1929 and 1932 and was originally 87.5 m . It is often considered to be the first skyscraper in Europe; it also was the tallest in Europe until 1952, and the tallest in Belgium from 1932 to 1967 (currently 18th tallest).
Letterenhuis
The Letterenhuis ("House of Literature") is a Belgian non-profit organization located in Antwerp. The Letterenhuis collects and archives information of Flemish writers and artists, and portraits concerning Flemish culture as from 1750. The Letterenhuis fulfills two tasks: on the one hand it is an archiving and documentation centre and on the other hand it is a museum.
French Fury
The "French Fury" was a failed attempt by François, Duke of Anjou to conquer the city of Antwerp by surprise on January 17, 1583. During the Eighty Years' War the States-General had asked in 1581 the French Duke to become head of state of the Seventeen Provinces, to obtain French support in expelling the Spanish troops. Anjou did not have much influence in the Netherlands, and attempted to seize more power.
Artesis Hogeschool Antwerpen
Artesis Hogeschool Antwerpen (Artesis University College Antwerp) is a major college in Flanders, Belgium, with campusses in Antwerp, Mechelen, Lier and Turnhout. It comprises numerous departments, ranging from Linguistics and Industrial Engineering to Teacher Training and Applied Computer Science. In 2013, the college will merge with the Plantijn Hogeschool.
Roman Catholic Diocese of Antwerp
The Diocese of Antwerp is a diocese of the Catholic Church in Belgium. The diocese was restored in 1961. It is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Mechelen-Brussels. Its see is the Cathedral of Our Lady.
Carolus Borromeuskerk
The Carolus Borromeuskerk is a church in Antwerp, located at the Hendrik Conscienceplein. The church was formerly known for 39 ceiling pieces by Rubens that were lost in a fire when it was struck by lightning on July 18, 1718.
