Lyakhavichy Raion
Lyakhavichy Raion is an administrative subdivision, a raion of Brest Voblast, in Belarus.
Lyakhavichy
Lyakhavichy is a city in the southwestern Belarusian voblast (province) of Brest. For many centuries, it was part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The city's fortress, Liahavichy Castle, survived all sieges during the Russo–Polish War (1654–1667), and was nicknamed the Jasna Góra of Lithuania. During World War II Nazi Germans set up a ghetto for the Jews there.
Siege of Lyakhavichy
Siege of Lyakhavichy (Lachowicze) took place from 23 March to 28 June 1660 during the Russo-Polish War (1654–1667). Lachowicze was one of the major Grand Duchy of Lithuania strongholds in the disputed region (modern Belarus). A Russian army of about 30,000 under Ivan Nikitich Khovansky laid siege to the castle, defended by Mikołaj Judycki.
Liahavichy Castle
Liahavichy Castle (also Lyakhavichy, Lachowicze, Lyakhovichi, Lachavičy or Liahovichi) was a fortified Belarus castle. It was one of the most significant castles in Belarus in the 17th century. It may have been in existence as a hill fort since the eleventh or twelfth century. It was built at the end of the 16th century by the hetman Yan Eromin of the Hadkevich family, on a hill in the Belarus town of the same name.
