Sandy Lane (resort)
Sandy Lane is a luxury five star beach-front resort situated close to Holetown and Paynes Bay, in Saint James on the island-nation of Barbados. Sandy Lane was first opened in 1961 after Ronald Tree, a former British politician, had an idea to build a luxury hotel and golf course on what was an old sugar plantation named 'Sandy Lane'. In 1998, after being put up for sale by Granada plc, a group of five Irish businessmen including J. P. McManus, Dermot Desmond and John Magnier, bought the hotel.
Paynes Bay, Barbados
Paynes Bay sometimes called the "Platinum Coast" is located on the west coast of Barbados. Many locals believe that it is one of the island's best swimming beaches for both the calm seas of the Caribbean (in comparison to the strong south or east coast surf) and the colorful neighborhood. In recent years, Paynes Bay has experienced significant development, most recently by various foreign speculators who are in the process of constructing condominiums along the bay.
3Ws Oval
The 3Ws Oval is a cricket field at the entrance of the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies in Barbados. Mostly known for the sculpture in the shape of three large wickets that stand tall on the incline above the field. The 3Ws Oval was one of the team warm-up venues for the 2007 Cricket World Cup finals, which were played at the nearby Kensington Oval stadium. The 3Ws has undergone a huge redevelopment over the last four years to meet ICC standards.
Bellairs Research Institute
The Bellairs Research Institute, located on the Caribbean island of Barbados, was founded in 1954 as a field-station for McGill University. Initial funding was from a bequest by British naval commander, Carlyon Bellairs, for whom the institute is named. Bellairs is located in Holetown, next to Folkstone Park, steps away from the beach. Initially founded as a marine biology field station, it is also currently used for undergraduates to partake in a Barbados Field Study Semester (BFSS).
Queen's College (Barbados)
Queen's College was established as a result of the recommendation of an Education Commission whose report suggested that Barbados required a first grade school for girls. The school focused on academic excellence and its mandate was to produce an education for girls similar to that in the top educational institutions in Great Britain. The school commenced operation at Constitution Road on January 29, 1883 with thirty-three female students. Their ages ranged from three to nineteen.
