Leonora is a town in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia, located 833 kilometres northeast of the state capital, Perth, and 237 kilometres north of the city of Kalgoorlie. At the 2006 census, Leonora had a population of 401, about a third of whom are of Aboriginal descent. The area is extremely arid, with a mean annual rainfall of just 230 millimetres . Mean daily maximum temperatures range from 18°C (64°F) in July to 37°C (99°F) in January. Leonora is primarily a mining town.
Gwalia, Western Australia
Gwalia is a former gold-mining town located 233 kilometres north of Kalgoorlie and 828 kilometres east of Perth in Western Australia's Great Victoria Desert. Today, Gwalia is essentially a ghost town, having been largely deserted since the main source of employment, the Sons of Gwalia gold mine, closed in 1963. Just four kilometres north is the town of Leonora, which remains the hub for the area's mining and pastoral industries.
