Bairnsdale
Bairnsdale is a small city in Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. With a population at the 2006 census of 11,282, it is a major regional centre of eastern Victoria along with Traralgon and Sale. Bairnsdale is located on the river flats of the Mitchell River, near where the Mitchell River flows into Lake King. Bairnsdale is the commercial centre for the East Gippsland region and the seat of local government for the Shire of East Gippsland.

Raymond Island

The island is approximately 6 km long by 2 km wide, and is just 200 m off the coast, across from the town of Paynesville. The island is named after William Odell Raymond, originally a magistrate from New South Wales who established himself as a squatter in Gippsland in the 1840s.
Bairnsdale railway station
Bairnsdale Railway Station is the current operating terminus of the Gippsland railway in Victoria, Australia. It serves V/Line rail and coach passenger services and is located on Macleod Street. The station was formerly part of the longer Orbost railway line which continued on to Orbost, however this section was closed in 1987 and now exists as the East Gippsland Rail Trail, a shared bicycle, walking, and horseriding track.

The Mitchell River is the largest unregulated river in Victoria, Australia and provides a unique example of riparian ecology. Tributaries include the Crooked, Dargo, Wentworth, Wonnangatta, and Wongungarra Rivers, which are surrounded by dense native forest on the steep mountains of the Victorian Alps. The river flows south and enters Lake King, one of the Gippsland Lakes. The river was named by Angus McMillan in 1839 after Sir Thomas Mitchell, explorer and Surveyor General of New South Wales.

For its first hundred years it governed both Bairnsdale and the surrounding area; however, after that time, Bairnsdale had its own city government.

At the 2006 census, Nicholson and surrounds had a population of 1,504. Nicholson is located on the Princes Highway and lies on the banks of the Nicholson River. Nicholson Post Office opened on 1 August 1885.

Nicholson railway station
Nicholson Station was opened on Monday 10 April 1916 as part of the Orbost railway line and closed on Monday 24 August 1987. Little trace remains of the station site, however a station name board exists at the site as part of the East Gippsland Rail Trail, which follows the route of the former rail line.
Bumberrah railway station
Bumberrah Railway Station and siding was opened on Monday 10 April 1916 as part of the Orbost railway line. It was closed in 1977, with the last train passing the site in 1987. The former station grounds have been preserved, with a diversity of native flora on the site remaining as a result of it being protected from grazing stock during its time in service to the railways.
Mossiface railway station
Mossiface Railway Station and siding was opened on Monday 10 April 1916 as part of the Orbost railway line. The station has long since closed, with the last train passing the site in 1987. The former station grounds have been preserved, and are surrounded by the small Mossiface township consisting of a few houses, farms, and facilities, including some historic hop kilns. The site overlooks the Tambo River flats, which are used as productive grazing farmland.
Nicholson River (Victoria)
The Nicholson River is a river in East Gippsland, Victoria, Australia, lying between the Mitchell and the Tambo Rivers. It has a length of 72.5 km . The river was named by Angus McMillan in 1839 after Charles Nicholson, who represented the Port Phillip District on the NSW Legislative Council and was later Colonial Secretary. The Nicholson River begins in the Angora Range in the lower reaches of the Australian Alps west of Ensay.
Bruthen railway station
Bruthen Railway Station was opened on Monday 10 April 1916 as part of the Orbost railway line. The station officially closed on Monday 24 August 1987. The former platform remains evident at the station site, with the site remaining as part of the East Gippsland Rail Trail, which follows the route of the former rail line. The station itself is slightly to the east of the town of Bruthen.
Mitchell River silt jetties
The Mitchell River silt jetties are an unusually long, thin landform located in the Gippsland Lakes region in Victoria, Australia. A type of digitate delta, they have been formed over millions of years by sediment deposition from the Mitchell River during periods of low water flow and subsequent wash-through during periods of high water flow. The long narrow banks of silt thus formed extend more than eight kilometres east into Lake King.
Haughtons Flat Diversion Tunnel
The Haughtons Flat Diversion Tunnel is a Victorian gold rush diversion tunnel on the Nicholson River in Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. It is located at the southern end of the former Deptford township, approximately 35 km north of Bairnsdale. The tunnel is approximately 50 m long. The diversion was probably excavated in 1873 by the Nicholson River Sluicing Company.
Bairnsdale Secondary College
Bairnsdale Secondary College is a public co-educational secondary school located in Bairnsdale, Victoria, Australia. As of 2010 the school has approximately 1,100 students from Year 7 to year 12. Bairnsdale secondary college has four main bands consisting of the junior band, intermediate band, senior band and swing band all performing locally and interstate every year. Bairnsdale Secondary College opened its doors in 1912 as Bairnsdale High School.
