Ballarat is a city located on the Yarrowee River and lower western plains of the Great Dividing Range in the state of Victoria, Australia, approximately 105 kilometres west-north-west of the state capital; Melbourne. With an estimated urban area population of just over 94,000 people, Ballarat is the third most populous urban area in the state. The name Wendouree comes from a local aboriginal word wendaaree which means 'go away': a story is told that when settler William Cross Yuille asked a local indigenous woman what the name of the swamp was, that was her reply.

The Ballarat Botanical Gardens Reserve, located on the western shore of picturesque Lake Wendouree, in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, covers an area of 40 hectares which is divided into three distinct zones. The central Botanical Gardens reserve in the 'gardenesque' style of the Victorian pleasure garden. On either side there are open parkland buffers known as the North and South Gardens. The Gardens celebrated its sesquicentenary (150 years old) in 2007.

Lake Wendouree is a suburb of Ballarat, Victoria, Australia located immediately west of the Ballarat CBD and encompasses the man-made recreational lake Lake Wendouree after which it is named. At the 2006 census, Lake Wendouree had a population of 1,471 It is Ballarat's most prestigious address and home to many of the city's wealthiest residents and home to much of its old money.

Wendouree railway station is a passenger-only station on the Ballarat and Ararat railway lines, located in the western Ballarat suburb of Wendouree, Victoria approximately 100 metres west of the Gillies Street level crossing. When opened in 2010 Wendouree station became one of just two functioning passenger railway stations in urban Ballarat and a terminus for many trains on the Ballarat railway line.
