Port Augusta, South Australia
Port Augusta is the seventh most populous city in South Australia after Adelaide, Mount Gambier, Whyalla, Murray Bridge, Port Lincoln and Port Pirie. It is a seaport and railway junction city on the east coast of the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia at the head of the Spencer Gulf, 322 kilometres north of the state capital. Other major industries include electricity generation.

The prison has facilities for high, medium and low security prisoners including protectees and special needs prisoners. With a capacity of 478 male and 8 female inmates, the prison is one of only two facilities in the State that provides accommodation for female prisoners and has a significant Indigenous Australian population.

It was the focus of much of the controversy concerning the mandatory detention of asylum seekers in Australia. Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden
The Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden is located on the Stuart Highway, 1.4 kilometres north of the Eyre Highway in Port Augusta, South Australia. The garden was established in the 1980s and opened in September 1996. It is an initiative of the City of Port Augusta and corporate funding, and very limited state-government support. The Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden was designed by the landscape architect, Grant Henderson.
Stirling North, South Australia
Stirling North is a small town located 7 km east of Port Augusta in South Australia. It acts primarily as a satellite town to Port Augusta with the town's railway station lying at a major rail junction linking the Port Augusta power station and the main east-west rail link to the coal rail link to Leigh Creek. It also lies on the junction of the Eyre Highway and Port Wakefield Roads. At the 2006 census, Stirling North had a population of 1,698.
