Magnetic Island National Park

Magnetic Island is a national park in Queensland, Australia, 1122 km northwest of Brisbane, lying just off the coast from the city of Townsville. It occupies more than half of the area of Magnetic Island. Most of the park is in the western part of the island.

Magnetic Island

Magnetic Island is an island 8 kilometres offshore from the city of Townsville, Queensland, Australia. This 52 km mountainous island in Cleveland Bay has effectively become a suburb of Townsville, with 2,107 permanent residents. The island is accessible from Townsville Breakwater to Nelly Bay Harbour by ferry. There is a large 27 km National Park and bird sanctuary and walking tracks can be taken between the populated bays and to a number of tourist destinations such as the World War II forts.

Picnic Bay is also an alternative name of Sok Kwu Wan, Hong Kong. Picnic Bay refers to both a bay on the south-east corner of Magnetic Island and the island's main town. Until recently, the bay was the landing site for ferry services from the mainland, but ferries now arrive at a new terminal at nearby Nelly Bay, Queensland.

PS George Rennie

The George Rennie was a steel hulled ship scuttled in the lee of Hawking Point, Magnetic Island, Queensland, Australia. It was built in 1885 in Middlesex as a 151 gross ton paddle steamer. In 1896 the vessel was purchased by Howard Smith and Company who converted it into a lighter. Howard Smith and Company used the vessel to transport coal to from anchorage at West Point to Townsville harbour. It was scuttled in 1902 to serve as a breakwater for a small jetty in the bay.

ABC North Queensland

Stable on the Strand

Stable on the Strand is an annual Christmas event in the Australian city of Townsville, described as "part installation, part fun fair and part theatrical performance". For five days before Christmas (18–22 December) each year, Townsville’s major ocean-front park, The Strand is transformed into the historic town of Bethlehem, complete with Roman soldiers, traditional craftspeople, livestock, shepherds and of course Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus. The event attracts up to 40,000 visitors a year.

Cockle Bay (Queensland)

Cockle Bay is a small bay in the south-western corner of Magnetic Island. It lies on the western side of Nobby Head, a headland which juts out at the southernmost end of the island. The bay is populated with a number of small residential premises. Access to the bay is gained via an unsealed road which leads through the mangrove flats to the north of Cockle Bay to West Point Road, which in-turn connects to Picnic Bay and West Point.

The City of Adelaide was a passenger steam ship launched in 1863 in Glasgow, Scotland. The vessel was later converted to a Barque for use as a cargo transport. In 1912 the vessel was gutted by fire, and in 1916 the burnt hulk was run aground in Cockle Bay, Magnetic Island, Australia. During the Second World War four people were killed in a training accident when a RAAF aircraft struck the masts of the vessel.

Moltke (1870)

The Moltke was a three-masted barque built in Hamburg, Germany in 1870. The vessel was wrecked off the coast of northern Queensland, Australia in 1890 before being refloated and hulked. In 1911 the vessel was scuttled off Geoffrey Bay, Magnetic Island. The wreck of the vessel now hosts a wide range of underwater life and is a popular open-water dive site.

Magnetic Battery

The Magnetic Battery, Fort War or The Forts, as it is commonly referred, is a former Australian Royal Navy artillery battery in the hinterland of Horseshoe. Florence and Arthur Bays on Magnetic Island. Built in 1942/1943, the battery operated from July 1943 until the end of World War II. The remains of the facility are now maintained by Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service as part of the Magnetic Island National Park and are open to visitors year round.

USS YP-279

USS YP-279 was a United States Navy district patrol craft during World War II. The ship was built by the Campbell Machine Company of San Diego as a 125-foot 230 GRT tuna seiner. Delivered in August 1929, she operated under the name Navigator until requisitioned by the United States Navy in 1942, and commissioned as the yard patrol craft USS YP-279. The ship foundered in heavy weather off Townsville, Australia, on 5 September 1943.

Bay Rock Light is an inactive lighthouse which used to be located on Bay Rock, a rocky islet northwest of Magnetic Island, about 20 kilometres north of Townsville, Queensland, Australia.
