The City of Shoalhaven is a local government area in the south-eastern coastal region of New South Wales, Australia. The area is approximately 200 kilometres south of Sydney and is more or less conterminous with an area referred to as The Shoalhaven. The reserve is composed of two sections: the Bherwerre Peninsula, on the southern foreshore of Jervis Bay, Bowen Island and the waters of the south of the bay lands bordered by Wreck Bay to the south, St Georges Basin to the north and Sussex Inlet to the west What is now the national park was declared as a nature reserve in 1971. Milton, New South Wales
Milton is a town in the City of Shoalhaven on the South Coast of New South Wales, Australia, not far from Ulladulla. It was founded in the middle of the 19th century. The coastal area of in the Milton-Ulladulla-Mollymook area was seen by Captain James Cook in 1770 when sailing north along the east coast of Australia and he noted the nearby Pigeon House Mountain. The Reverend Thomas Kendall was the first European settler to the area when he started cutting cedar at Narrawallee Creek near Milton.

It is on the Princes Highway, about half way between the larger towns of Batemans Bay to the south and Nowra to the north and about 180 kilometres south of Sydney. The Ulladulla area is a seven-kilometre stretch of continuous urban residential development from the southern edge of Ulladulla, through the town of Mollymook, to Narrawallee in the north, terminating at the Narrawallee estuary.

Bherwerre Parish
The Parish of Bherwerre is a parish of the County of St Vincent in New South Wales which formerly included the area that is now the Jervis Bay Territory, which was transferred to the Commonwealth of Australia in 1915. Because of this, the parish is now less than half the size it was in the nineteenth century. The Jervis Bay Territory Acceptance Act of 1915 mentions that 18,000 acres of the parish were transferred to the Commonwealth.

Yatteyattah Nature Reserve
Yatteyattah Nature Reserve is a protected area of only 35 hectares, situated near Milton in the south coast region of New South Wales, Australia. The monzonite based soils, moderate climate and 1200 mm of annual rainfall produce a high quality Forest Red Gum forest on the higher plateau. The rainforest is of scientific interest as it is the most significant southerly sub tropical rainforest remnant in Australia.
