At the 2006 census, Woodenbong had a population of 333. It is 798 km north-east of Sydney, 145 km from Brisbane and 60 km north-west of Kyogle.

The village is located in the Tenterfield Shire local government area, 822 kilometres north of the state capital, Sydney, and 155 kilometres south west of Brisbane.
