Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly
The Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly (formally, the Legislative Assembly for the Australian Capital Territory) is the unicameral legislature of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). It sits in the Legislative Assembly Building located on Civic Square, close to the centre of the city of Canberra. It was created by four acts of the Commonwealth Parliament in 1988, including the Australian Capital Territory (Self-Government) Act 1988.
North Canberra
North Canberra, also known as the Inner North, is a district of Canberra, the capital city of Australia, comprising 14 suburbs with 19,115 dwellings housing 42,113 people of the 324,034 people in the Australian Capital Territory (2006 Census). Many of Canberra's oldest dwellings are in this district.
City, Australian Capital Territory
The central business district of Canberra, Australia's capital city, is officially named City. However it is also referred to as Civic, Civic Centre, City Centre, Canberra City and Canberra. Canberra's City was officially established in 1927, although the suburb name City was not gazetted until 20 September 1928. Walter Burley Griffin's design for Canberra included a "Civic Centre" with a separate "Market Centre" located at what is now Russell.
Division of Australian Capital Territory
The Division of Australian Capital Territory was an Australian electoral division in the Territory of the same name. The division was created in 1949 and included the whole of the city of Canberra and surrounding rural areas. Prior to 1949, the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) had no representation in the Australian Parliament. Whilst the inaugural Member for the ACT was elected at the 1949 federal election, the Member could vote only on matters relating to the ACT.
Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory
The Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory is the superior court for the ACT. It has unlimited jurisdiction within the territory in civil matters (although it usually only hears matters involving more than A$250,000), and hears the most serious criminal matters. In the Australian court hierarchy it is one of 8 state and territory Supreme Courts having unlimited jurisdiction in their respective parts of Australia.
City Hill, Canberra
City Hill is a park located in Canberra, Australia on one of the points of the Parliamentary Triangle, a feature of Walter Burley Griffin's plan for the city. The park is surrounded by Vernon Circle, at the south end of Northbourne Avenue but the precinct extends to London Circuit and is an integral part of the city centre design. To the south of the hill Northbourne Avenue becomes Commonwealth Avenue, and further along is Commonwealth Avenue bridge. The hill was planted in 1921.
Parkes Way
Parkes Way is a major road in Canberra, Australia, which runs east-west between Kings Avenue and the Glenloch Interchange. At Glenloch Interchange it intersects with William Hovell Drive, Tuggeranong Parkway and Caswell Drive. The road is freeway standard from the Commonwealth Avenue overpass to Glenloch Interchange. It passes by the edge of Black Mountain and under part of the Australian National University.
London Circuit
London Circuit is a road in Canberra, Australia, which surrounds City Hill in Civic, the city centre. It has a hexagonal shape, and intersects with several main roads such as Northbourne Avenue, Edinburgh Avenue, Akuna Street, Constitution Avenue and Commonwealth Avenue . Several important buildings are located on London Circuit.
Legislative Assembly Building, Canberra
The ACT Legislative Assembly Building, also known as the South Building, is located on the southern side of Civic Square, London Circuit, Civic in the Australian Capital Territory. The modernist-style building has been the home of the Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly since 1994 after it was refurbished to accommodate the Chamber and provide space for MLAs' offices. The Assembly first met during 1989 in a temporary Chamber at 1 Constitution Avenue.
Canberra Theatre
The Canberra Theatre Centre is the Australian Capital Territory’s central performing arts venue and Australia’s first performing arts centre, the first Australian Government initiated performing arts centre to be completed. It opened on Thursday 24 June 1965 with a gala performance by the Australian Ballet. The Centre is sited in the heart of Canberra's City Centre, beside the ACT Legislative Assembly and backing onto City Hill, one of the apexes of the Parliamentary Triangle.
Canberra Central
The District of Canberra Central is one of the 18 districts of the Australian Capital Territory used in land administration. It is subdivided into divisions (suburbs), sections and blocks. It is mentioned in the Districts Act 1966. It includes the Inner North and Inner South. While the other districts in the Canberra area are well known - Canberra Central would less often be thought of as a district outside of its administrative use: more often as the Inner North and Inner South.
Australian Capital Territory House of Assembly
The Australian Capital Territory House of Assembly was the main elected representative body of the Australian Capital Territory between 1975 and 1986, when preparations began to be made for the granting of self-government to the Territory. It served a largely advisory role, with most powers over the Territory still lying in the hands of the relevant federal minister through the life of the Assembly.
